The wisdom of a mother’s admonishment, “You are too smart for your own good” or “You’ve outsmarted yourself,” was not a compliment. Facing the severest of consequences, adults “outsmart” themselves when they view themselves and the world through a secular prism while discounting the great wisdom of biblical scripture. Men and women go to great lengths to escape the authority of God, preferring to live by their own countenance and rules while subjugating those of their Creator.

Recently, a world-renown individual, who is both scholarly and held in great esteem as a member of the intelligentsia, proclaimed that he is a Christian. Upon further discussion about God’s authority, he disputed biblical creation in Genesis by saying that, “God didn’t say it; the Bible said it!” Separating God from the written scriptures revealed a great tragedy in this man’s life. His secular brilliance failed him as he rejected biblical scripture as being the Word of God. The Bible clearly reveals that God, Jesus Christ, is the Word:

JOHN 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Like many intellectuals who outsmart themselves, in matters eternal, this man also appeared satisfied that he was smart enough to cherry-pick the Bible and use his own intellect to reconfigure God’s word to suit both his lifestyle and philosophical interpretations. The Bible warns that valuing one’s own intelligence over God’s wisdom is not a blessing, but a curse.

Another brilliant man, a scholarly writer of books and an international speaker, believes that God is the Creator of humankind, but contends that God must constantly change to adapt to the ways of man. Essentially saying, that God transforms His will to our behavior; that the created (humans) rule the Creator. In the Old Testament God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”  Yet, some intelligentsia want to believe that God really meant, “I WILL BE THAT I WILL BE,” allowing that a befuddled God must be ever-changing in order to bend to human will.

Both the Old and New Testaments are clear that God’s Word is the final authority and that he is unchanging:

MALACHI 3:6 – "For I the Lord do not change;

HEBREWS 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

In interviews, I often note that non-Christians, looking to devise their own salvation, like to hold up signs that recite only the first half of John 3:16. Countering God’s plan for salvation, they ignore God’s full instruction in the verse -- to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior:

JOHN 3:16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Those too smart for the narrow gate, claiming world-class intelligence, fall desperately short of the wisdom of God. God tells us in Matthew 7:13-15 that it is a narrow gate that leads to Him:

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it 15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”  God further reveals in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.”

An uneducated man or woman armed with the wisdom of God is blessed beyond all measure to those who substitute worldly knowledge in place of God’s written word and self-determination in place of God’s will. Message to all from the God of the Bible:  “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.”  Isaiah 55: 8-9

Life reveals that rote or higher intelligence is not wisdom. The “narrow gate” is a reality and its implications are eternal. To understand who your Creator is, read the book, Darwin’s Racists Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow ( that equips the reader in the creation vs. evolution debate. For wisdom and guidance from your Creator, read the Bible.  Everyone – great and small – hears the echo of eternity.
